For over 60 years, Aran Woollen Mills has been a cornerstone of traditional Irish knitwear. Rooted in Westport, County Mayo, and inspired by the raw beauty of the Irish coastline, our handcrafted Aran sweaters have warmed hearts and shoulders around the world.
Nestled in the charming town of Westport, County Mayo, lies the heart and soul of Aran Woollen Mills. For 60 years, this breathtaking corner of Ireland has shaped every thread, stitch, and design. As we celebrate six decades of Irish knitwear craftsmanship at Aran Woollen Mills, we reflect on the place that continues to inspire us every single day.
Westport Is Who We Are

When speaking with our Creative Director, Vincent Hughes, he summed it up perfectly:
"Westport is who we are. You couldn’t ask for a more beautiful town and landscape to be inspired by."
And he’s absolutely right.
Westport is more than a location; it’s a feeling, a way of life, and the heartbeat of our brand. Known for its colourful shopfronts, artisan makers, and welcoming people, this town draws over 100,000 visitors each year, and every one of them feels the magic we’ve been lucky to live with for decades.
Since Aran Woollen Mills first opened its doors in 1965, it has been deeply rooted in this community. The warmth of the people, the richness of the heritage, and the stunning natural surroundings are all woven into the fabric of our garments. This connection is not just something we talk about, it’s something you can see, feel, and wear.
There’s no greater honour than seeing tourists enjoy the town we are inspired by, whether it’s with a pint in hand at Matt Molloy’s, strolling through the gardens of Westport House, or enjoying a meal at An Port Mór.
Where Knitwear Meets the Irish Landscape – The Wild Atlantic Way
Our designs are guided by three principles: they are authentically Irish, rooted in heritage craft, and made from natural materials. But perhaps most importantly, they are born from the land itself.
The scenery of west coast of Ireland, known as The Wild Atlantic Way, is one of the most inspiring places on earth, and we’re lucky enough to call it home. From the lush greens of our fields and the soft purples of the heather, to the ocean blues and the ever-changing greys of our skies and mountains; our knitwear reflects the colours, textures, and rhythm of this landscape.
Culture, Language & Community
At Aran Woollen Mills, we don’t just make sweaters, we share Irish heritage. For 60 years, we’ve carried forward the traditional Aran stitches that have been passed down through the generations. Each one tells a story of resilience, family, and home.
We are deeply proud of our Irish identity, and we love that our knitwear helps people across the world feel connected to theirs. Whether you're Irish-born or part of the global Irish diaspora, our designs are a wearable celebration of culture and craft.
When you wear an Aran sweater, you’re not just wearing something warm and stylish, you’re wearing a piece of Ireland. You’re wearing six decades of artistry, tradition, and pride.
60 Years of Irish Craft. A Lifetime of Inspiration.
As we mark this incredible milestone, we’re more connected than ever to the place where it all began. Our love for Westport, Mayo, and the west coast of Ireland continues to grow, and with each passing year, our knitwear becomes an even deeper reflection of our roots.
Here’s to the next 60 years of heritage, of craftsmanship, and of celebrating the land and people that make it all possible.
From our family in Westport to yours, thank you for being part of our story.
